Wayland factory upgrade
Due to the Wayland major factory upgrades in 2014/15, there have been many production changes / improvements / additions to the current Wayland range, so many of the photos may show the earlier variants. Photos on the 'Recent Deliveries' page will show the latest variants.

Descriptions on this site are subject to change without prior notice.

Can I paddle anywhere?
In the UK, you need a license to paddle in most of the waterways, rivers, lakes, etc.
BCU membership (Canoe England, Canoe Wales, Scotland Canoe Association and the Canoe Association of Northern Ireland) includes a licence to paddle on 5000km of Britain's waterways and canals.

Not all inland water is open to canoeists, some are privately owned or is bounded by land which is private, so do check beforehand. See Useful Web sites page.

In other countries, do check with your national kayak organisations and waterway / off-shore agencies etc.

Features

Below are the decking, hull features and accessories that comes standard (or optional extra) with the SMARTLINE, BASIC, EXPEDITION, COMMANDO and COMBAT versions of the Wayland kayaks and replacement skins (Klepper, Pouch, etc) as well as some of the customisation options available. For example, for customisation - you can opt for a BASIC kayak and request to have any number of Expedition / Optional Extra features added. A popular customisation request from those ordering a BASIC Harpoon I is the addition of Deck-lines with D-rings, paddle pockets (to hold spare paddles), and rear hatch.

As the factory is constantly improving, descriptions are subject to change without prior notice. Please note that features listed here does not necessarily mean that they are all standard. If there are particular features that you require, do specifically request them. Be aware that sometimes it not possible to combine certain features because of lack of deck space.

The decking & hull features on replacement skins for other makes of kayaks such as the Klepper, Granta etc, can also be customised as required.

If you don't see what you want or you have special needs, especially fittings for expeditions etc, please do not hesitate to contact us. We want you to be more than satisfied with your Wayland Folding Kayak. Example fittings are foredeck torch holder, toggles to secure ropes, reinforced pocket for anchor, extra paddle pockets (spare paddles).

Note that the steering rudder pedals are positioned to suit a paddler of average height (1.8m). If the single kayak (or rear seat of a multi-seater) is intended to be used by a below / above average height paddler, then the pedal slider brackets can be unscrewed and repositioned accordingly by yourself. However, if the single kayak (or rear seat of a multi-seater) is intended to be shared by paddlers of differing heights, then request a second set of slider fittings, of which you can fit yourself.

. Standard with all kayaks. Made of waterproof CORDURA - standard in black (other colours are available) with orange straps except for Mk I Achilli / Mk II Zoska, the bags are all black.

If you intend to travel a lot on planes, or use couriers to send boat in advance of your trips, etc where there is rough baggage handling whist in transit, do request for heavy duty variant carry bags. (extra cost).

Kayak carts designed specifically for folding kayaks is a very useful accessory, especially if needing to walk distances. Available to order on this site.

Types of packing bags:-
- Carry Bags open at the one end (secured closed with belt strap) and have external pockets / securing straps for paddles & sail rig poles.
- Single seater Backpack Bags open on the one long side with zippers.
- Multi-seater Backpack Bags open at the top (secured closed with belt strap).
- Optional extra Ribs Carry bag - zippers at top

Mk I Achilli / Mk II Zoska bags may vary in descriptions to above.

Standard packing bags as supplied with wooden framed kayaks:-
Harpoon I 450 - 1 x Backpack bag:- 130 x 55 x 25cm
Harpoon I 500XL - 1 x Backpack bag:- 150 x 55 x 25cm
Mk I Achilli - 1 x Backpack bag - 125 x 55 x 25cm
Amazon II, Trojak III, Ursus IV -
1 x Carry bag - 150 x 30 x 30cm. 1 x Backpack bag - 90 x 50 x 40cm. (Ursus 4 - Rib bag 80 x 40 x 30cm)
Amazon II 600XXL - 1 x Carry bag - 160 x 30 x 30cm. 1 x Backpack bag - 90 x 60 x 45cm
Mk II Zoska - 1 x Carry bag - 90 x 70 x 40cm. Backpack bag - 45 x 45 x 145-165cm

You can opt to change for a larger multi-bag set to spread the total weight across more bags. EG - The standard backpack bag for the Harpoon I 500XL, due to it's size and weight (+/- 30kg), is a bit cumbersome & heavy for some to carry over a distance. For the double & multi-seater kayaks, you can opt for a 3 bag set. See extra Rib bag in the Accessories page.

Standard Harpoon I Backpack bag - single seaters

Standard Amazon II / Trojak III / Ursus IV Backpack bag (background) and Carry Bag (foreground) . The Carry Bag has external pockets for paddles and sail rig poles

Backpacks / carry bags for military boats are in all black. The shoulder straps are padded. For Mk II Zoska / Formoza kayaks, there is a tray version backpack which has a base that doubles up as a holding tray when attached to the stern deck - useful to hold diving equipment etc - this tray is only currently available in plain hypalon. The main part of the integrated bag folds flat inside the tray. This Integrated Tray Backpack is available on special request.

Mk II Zoska bags - Tray Backpack bag (optional extra) and long Carry Bag. Standard Zoska bags come without the integrated tray.

Base of Tray Backpack secured to rear deck, creating a loading tray. The current version does not have inflatable air rings as shown here.

Standard packing bags as supplied with Alu framed kayaks:-
Proximo I - 1 x Backpack bag:- 110 x 45 x 35cm
Vector II - to be announced

The Backpack bag for the Proximo I has a compartment that covers the shoulder straps / harness. This ensures that the side of the bag that is normally in contact with your back and the shoulder straps do not get dirty when the bag is placed on the ground whilst packing / un-packing the kayak.

Camouflage skirt -
Standard with Mk I Achilli and Mk II Zoska / Formoza (part of Commando Pack). Optional extra for all other kayaks. Can be made to fit any make of kayak. The standard camouflage skirt covers the entire kayak, from the coaming / breakwater down to just above the waterline. A separate piece covers from the coaming up to the waist (one piece is available). A selection of patterns and material is available, ranging from lightweight nylon to 'heavy duty' but heavier cotton. See Colours page

British MTP (EREBIS) pattern covering a Mk II Formoza 550XL COMBAT
EREBIS pattern on special request

Carry handles
. Standard on all kayaks / replacement skins. Fore and aft, extra strong - to enable you and your partner to carry a heavily laden kayak. There are two types of carry handles available - the standard toggle type similar to the handles as used on Kleppers, and the previous stiff upright hypalon type handle (parallel to the boat). Photos of kayaks in the Recent Deliveries page show the toggle handles in use from August 2013 onwards, and prior to that date, the kayaks have the hypalon version handles. The previous earlier model kayaks (pre 2010) had soft floppy handles set at right angles to the keel line, no longer made. Photos on this site shows all 3 versions.

Cord piping. Along entire deck edge.
Give your kayak that really special look! Available in red, olive, black or yellow.

Cord piping - in red, Pacific Blue deck

Deck-lines with D-rings. Standard on EXPEDITION and Mk I Achilli / Mk II Zoska , optional with BASIC. In the event of an capsize or 'man overboard' situation, the full perimeter safety deck-lines provides swimmers with something to easily hold on to whilst in the water (and to stick a paddle through to avoid loosing it, etc). The D-rings cater for various uses - serves as anchor points to secure light weight kit. This is a popular customisation feature to add to the BASIC kayak. Note that these D-rings are not suitable for heavy loading such as using them as anchor points to lift the kayak out of the water, or to support sail rigs, etc. If you need strong anchor points, request Lifting D-Rings or Deck Belts.

Deck-lines with no D-rings. Standard on the Proximo I

Deck Belts and Cargo Net
. Standard on foredeck on Mk I Achilli / Mk II Zoska COMMANDO, optional on rear. Also optional on EXPEDITION / BASIC. The belts have stainless eyelets - to hold bungy rope 'cargo nets'. The belts provide strong anchor points over the deck areas. The lengths of the deck belts varies according to the deck area.
NEW for 2015/6 season - instead of eyelets, there are D-rings on the upper edge of the deck belts. This allows for extra flexibility - EG use of straps.

On the COMBAT kayaks, the deck belts are continuous, from bow to stern and fitted with multiple D-rings

Deck Belt, front deck - Mk I Achilli

Deck Belts, rear deck - optional extra, Harpoon I 500XL

Hatches - front and rear
provide easy access to under-deck stored kit.

Wood framed kayaks - Optional extra

'Roll down' dry bag design version - front and rear
Using the same concept as the popular dry bag where the opening is rolled closed and looped back using attached buckles. There is an additional cover that goes over the top. As seen on the alu framed Proximo I sea kayak. Available in 2 sizes - large rear, large front and small front hatch. Not ideal for wood framed kayaks as the opening is quite small (central deck ridge bar splits the hatch opening in half)

New design (2013) Rear Hatch. Brunswick Green Amazon II 520

Zipper / Velcro design version - Front and rear
Rear hatch. The hatch itself has two covers, the inner cover that closes with a waterproof zipper, the outer and slightly larger cover uses extra wide velcro. You may need to deflate the sponsons slightly before opening the hatches especially in hot weather.
Front hatch - similar to the rear hatch, in same length.

2010-16 design Rear Hatch without removable bag. There is an outer and inner cover.
Nato Khaki Amazon 520

Alu Framed kayaks - Standard
Two loading hatches, a small front and a large rear hatch, both semi circular. Separate cover is made of Cordura - fastens over hatch opening with with elasticized cord. Inner integrated cover is of the same design / concept as used on dry bags. IE roll down and then fasten buckles together.

Closed hatch cover - small front hatch - Proximo I

Partially opened hatch - large rear hatch - Proximo I

Keel strips are extra HYPALON / CSM / TPU / PVC protective strips that run under the hull - to reduce the impact on the hull itself from chafing when beaching, etc - an estimated 80% of wear and abrasion occurs along the keel and chine areas of the hull. Extra keel strips is highly recommended if you plan to use the kayak a lot, especially on expeditions. Keel strips are strips 6cm wide, as long as the hull, bow to stern. Floor keel strip is one piece 25cm wide used along the central portion of the hull, bow to stern.

Options are:
Wood framed kayaks
1) 2 x 6cm keel strips
2) 4 x 6cm keel strips (Standard on COMMANDO/COMBAT and EXPEDITION kayaks / replacement hulls)
3) 1 x 25cm Floor keel strip + 2 x 6cm keel strips
Alu framed kayaks
4) 3 x 6cm keel strips
5) 25cm Floor keel strip

Lifting D-rings -
Standard on Mk I Achilli / Mk II Zoska Mk II Formoza, optional on all others. Load bearing attachment points. The Lifting D-rings (4) are strengthened with internal frame hooks sand serve as anchor points for lifting straps - to lower/raise a loaded kayak from quay side, mother-ship, helicopter, etc. These Lifting D-rings can also be used to support sail rigs.

On the civilian wood framed kayaks, two pairs of Lifting D-rings is an useful custom feature to include to the boat especially if you extensively paddle on canals / waterways where quay sides are often high above the waterline at put-ins / take outs, or using a mother ship (yacht) as a base station.

Lifting straps to use with Lifting D-rings are available as a separate optional accessory.

D-Rings
Normal Deck line D-ring on the left, D-Ring for sail rig mast in the middle, Lifting D-Ring on the right - Pacific Blue Trojak III+CH. The side accessory pocket shown here is of an previous design, the current design is a removable pocket clipped to the deck with buckles, allowing the paddle shaft to go under the accessory pocket.

Pockets (Standard on EXPEDITION, partially standard on Commando) to hold a spade, an axe, spare paddles, and PET bottles, together with toggles to fasten the respective items securely. Pockets for the spade and axe are made with HYPALON to protect the deck itself. Note that on the Harpoon I XL500, PET bottle holders are not normally positioned next to the paddler (deck too narrow at that point), but slightly further behind where the coaming ends and the deck widens. Also on the Harpoon I XL500, due to lack of space, it is not possible to combine PET bottle holders together with a rear hatch.

Side pockets hold small items such as snacks, maps, radio, mobiles, survival kit, ropes, torch, etc - items that you need ready access to. These side pockets are not water-tight - you will still need to place essential items in waterproof dry bags (not supplied).

On the commando kayaks, combined pockets for paddles and folding anchor are made of HYPALON. These pockets also have drainage holes. There are additional loops to keep the anchor line coiled. Pockets for PET bottles, side accessory pockets, spade pockets are not included - optional extra.

Quattro (4 air sponsons - 2 pairs)
- standard on the quattro versions of the Mk I Achilli / Mk II Zoska / Mk II Formoza , and on the civilian kayaks where listed. An extra pair of sponsons, added below the standard pair. Quattro primarily enables extra loading, and in some models, changes the hull profile slightly to a more stable and shallower draft, when all four independent sponsons are inflated. See Sponsons below.

Rudder - Standard on all wood framed kayaks. Rudder bracket - dural alloy. Rudder blade - aluminum. The rudder blade is free swinging - will lift on hitting underwater objects when moving forwards. There are two sizes rudder blade - standard and extra long +20cm (on request, extra cost). The longer blade would be useful for sailing. Alu framed kayaks - rudder is optional. Anodised rudder blade - optional extra. Commando kayaks - black rudder blade.

Rudder lifting line - Standard on all wood framed kayaks. Enables the dropping and lifting of the rudder blade from the rear seat position in the cockpit. There is a single cleat fixed to the coaming on the right hand side to fasten the rudder lifting line to.

Seats - Standard
Harpoon I, Amazon II, Trojak III & Ursus IV - bottom seat is adjustable. Backrest is fixed to the coaming.

Proximo I - one piece seat and backrest, suspended off the side frames.

Comfort Seats - ideal when paddling for hours in the kayak, is optional extra in wooden framed civilian kayaks. One piece padded seat and backrest, adjustable with side supporting straps. Comfort seats allow for greater flexibility in trimming the kayak - See Accessories page.

Inflatable comfort seats - standard with Commando kayaks. One piece padded seat and backrest, adjustable with side supporting straps. Comfort seats allow for greater flexibility in trimming the kayak

Sponsons - Standard
Sponsons are inflatable clear PVC tubes, easily inflated by mouth, that run along the entire length of the kayak on the inside of the hull, held in place in nylon sleeves - IE lateral floats. Deflated sponsons allow for a fast and easy assembly of the boat frame inside the slack boat skin. Inflated sponsons serve to tension the skin over the frame and to provide extra buoyancy / stability to the kayak. All kayaks come standard with a pair, one on each side. kayaks have larger diameter inflation tubes.

Approx air volume in sponsons - 70 liters in a Harpoon I 450, 85 liters in an Amazon II 520. In the event of a swamped boat, the full length sponsons on the perimeter of the boat ensures level and stable floatation - this enables quick and un-assisted re-entry.

Quattro sponsons (standard on Mk I Achilli / Mk II Zoska , and Quattro version of the civilian kayaks - Harpoon 500XL, Amazon II 600XXL, Ursus IV). Quattro is an extra pair of sponsons, positioned below the usual standard sponsons. Quattro allows the maximum weight loading levels in the kayak to be increased as well, and in some models, allows the hull profile to be either a V or a more rounded U shape. Sponsons are not inter-connected - inflating only the top two sponsons produces the V shape profile, inflating all four, produces a U shaped profile. Where possible, an U shaped profile produces a shallower draft and a more stable kayak. Note that with some models, the lower sponson pair has a smaller diameter than the top pair. The primary objective of quattro sponsons is increased weight loading / buoyancy.

Sponsons (in orange)
Left - Standard sponsons, right - Quattro sponsons

Standard PVC sponsons are fitted inside the orange coloured nylon sleeves, positioned between the wooden side 'ladders' (gunwales) and the skin. Trojak III +D Expedition in foreground, Amazon II Expedition in background. Commando kayaks have camouflage or black nylon sleeves.

External quick exchange sponson slots. On special request only - with optional extra external zippered sponson slots on commando kayaks (not C versions), it is possible to be able to quickly exchange sponsons whilst the kayak is disassembled. It is not advisable to opt for external sponson slots with Quattro's.
There are two slots, bow and stern, for each sponson. Note that these slots are prone to damage and leaks if there is excessive rough handling against rocks, etc.

Other custom fittings can be made to order. EG pouch/pocket/toggles to hold various accessories such as forward facing torches, panga (machete), extra paddles, rifle, anchor, ropes, reinforced D-rings for sail rigs, etc. Prices on request.
